Bio:

Tall and gaunt, he stands dressed mosstly in a dark cloak that falls around his shoulders and sweeps the ground around his feet, hiding the details of his body from sight.

You can dimly see an icon of some description on a chain around his neck, but he stares irritably and twitches his cloak to cover it.

His constant companion, a human skeleton dressed in rags and carrying a shortsword, clicks forwards a step before being waved back behind him.

“I do not appreciate too many questions as to my background. Know that my word is absolute, and my commitment to a task is entire, and we will get along fine. Nevertheless, I shall be watching you. I watch everyone. And death never sleeps.”

Oswald Mort was born on an unassuming Prime to unassuming parents. He had a few brothers and sisters, but due to poverty his fate was to be entwined with that of the Priests of Urtaku.

A local custom dictated that every ten years, the Priests would come down to the village from their mountain fortress, and select young men and women to become the next generation of Priests. Those that came from the village knew they would never return, and over the years an unofficial tradition of bribes ensured that only children from the poorest families were selected.

Oswalds parents pushed him forwards, glad to have one less mouth to feed. He had been less than useful in the fields, preferring to investigate the local wildlife – preferably the remains of kills by other, stronger animals.

Once accepted to the ranks of the Priests, his natural talent began to show through. He rose quickly through the ranks, becoming Brother Mort at the age of sixteen and passing his final exams at the age of twenty-five to gain the honorific Doctor. He was exploring the deeper vaults of the mountain, when he stepped through a carved stone doorway whilst murmuring the Prayer for the Seeker of Secrets to find himself in Sigil.

Eschewing the advances of the various power groups until he had more information, he has now found a job as an investigator. He is fascinated by the impressive variety of life in the city, and in his own small quarters he has begun to sketch his impressions of the creatures that roam the streets.

Dr Oswald Mort believes that all souls depart the body at the moment of death, leaving behind only the impure flesh. He uses his faith and magic to investigate what is left behind, in order to learn more about what has gone. He does not kill easily, but he will make use of what he sees as an empty vessel if it suits his purposes. He hopes one day to find a way to free his soul without death and experience existence as a being of pure spirit. In the meantime, he continues to research both magical and divine spells of increasing power.
